Cut

In order to maximize the diamond’s superlative properties, a number of cuts are then developed to further enhance it natural luster. The diamond’s cut unquestionably determines its brilliance.

The ideal diamond cut is a symmetrical arrangement of flat surfaces which together revise the shape of a single diamond crystal. These flat surfaces are referred to as facets. Believe it or not, there is no established measurement for the perfect diamond cut, but merely a collection of observations and proposed measurements are used. Instincts are mainly used in cutting because some diamond crystals have inclusions that need a particular cut to further conceal its flaws.

Cut is one aspect in diamond grading, along with it are color, clarity and carat which is collectively known as the 4 C’s if diamonds. Most gemologists and experts consider cut as the most significant characteristic amongst all 4, because even if the diamond has the perfect clarity and color if it has a poor cut, it will still produce a dull brilliance. If one flash a perfect piece of diamond under an ideal lighting but it somehow did not catch your attention, it is probably because of its cut.

There are a lot of aspects that corresponds to the overall cut of the diamonds. The depth and width can be reciprocated by how the light reflects inside and how it exits the diamond to form a sparkle. Diamond cuts may either be referred to as too shallow or when the light reflection escapes from the bottom of the stone, or too deep when the light is lost in the sides causing the stone to appear dull.

However, determining the ideal cut diamonds goes way beyond mere measurements of depth and width. In its complexities, an optical measuring gizmo uses a 3 dimensional replica to determine the perfect angles and proportions. The results of the interrelations of these various aspects will greatly impact how the light enters, behaves, and exits the diamonds with the aid of complicated computer modeling.

The traditional and the grandest cut ever developed is the brilliant round cut, it is still the most widely used amongst all the other fancy cuts available. Most if not all of the gemologists say that the round cut is the most complimenting cut for the diamonds. Although there are also countless of variations and fancy cuts that are used, here are few of them:

Marquise Cut

This cut looks life a football when observed from the top down. However, its disadvantage is its thin cut that tends to create a darker center referred to as the bow tie effect. But this effect can also be avoided if not eliminated by giving more attention to the depth and height of the crown.

Emerald Cut Diamonds

This one looks like a rectangle with truncated sides when viewed for the top. With this type of cut, color plays a very important role in the brilliance of the entire stone. It appears as a huge flash of diamond shine in the perfect angle.

Since all of this is merely a play of light optics and the perfect angles, the cut may arguably be the most critical feature to the exquisiteness of the diamonds. A lot of things may affect the brilliance of the stone as a whole that’s why it’s good to check all variables and options first before proceeding.

The choice of a certain cut is mostly decided in the natural shape of the rough diamond crystal, locations of flaws, and the carat weight preservation and sometimes even due to the popularity of a particular cut to consumers. The professional cutter must look at these aspects first before proceeding so as to really maximize the eternal beauty that a single timeless piece of diamond holds.
