Rings
Take a quick survey, right now, and what you see is the most prevalent jewelry?
It is rings of course. It is size conservative, status symbolizing, and an ornamental that can label your personality – all these while costing generally cheaper than anything else that’s on your jewelry box.
But rings aren’t jewelries however. In the past, rings have evolved not as an aesthetic ornamentation worn but of something more. High priests wear rings to signify the beliefs they carry. Office holders, those praetorians and senate officials in Rome carry rings that signify their position and influence. In the older age family rings are awarded to each member of the family, with each ring carrying its own influence. These rings carry the sigil of the house, and they are used often to authenticate documents.
Indeed one of biggest need for jewelry is its symbolism. In the more contemporary light, one of its greater functions is promise rings. As promise rings, any ring of value is given to someone, usually a guy to a girl, as a token of love. It may serve as a symbol to a love that’s professed, or else a promise that the feeling will hold on for a long time. Promise rings are traditional practice when weddings cannot take place until farther into the future. The grounds for these could include overseas deployment in the military, or even an ongoing war, an overseas work, or just a regular postponement of a marriage. While engagement rings are also suited to such instances, the promise rings are more appropriate due to the length of time it takes.
Engagement rings are perhaps the most illustrious function of rings. That is because people are willing to pay more for engagement rings than any other ring for any use, even if compared to wedding rings. Wedding rings would often go simple, most especially since wedding occasions are always expensive, and the people may be concerned in saving by slashing budget here and there. Because engagement rings could be expense free, it all natural to get the most exquisite engagement ring you can find.
In a similar light, asking for an engagement is like wooing somebody, that in order to take that somebody off her feet, you need to impress by giving the best diamond rings you can find. Solitaire rings, made well-known by the accompanying ad: “A Diamond is Forever” by De Beers, are the most coveted and timeless examples (plus the catchphrase) of engagement rings.
Wedding rings have been traditionally simple gold bands, though lately it had included other precious metals, like platinum, titanium and white gold as well. As a symbol of eternity, ring bands are popular choices. However, as simplicity is to some extent a lesser choice, pave settings have filled the somewhat inherent lack of detail in wedding rings. Pave rings are rather superfluous, but they do fill the niche of a high valued ring that’s very elegant and chic. Although at first glance pave rings are very expensive, for all the diamonds they contain they are quite price worthy. The diamonds used in pave rings are usually low class, oftentimes with more defects in them than they would show. Because they are group together, and since they are minute, these defects become invisible.
Eternity rings, also made famous by De Beers, are one of the classic choices for rings, and they signify timelessness. These rings are oftentimes in channel settings, having uniform design all around the band. These almost always incorporate diamonds and its synthetic counterparts.
From simple wedding bands to superfluous rings with frills and thrills, from the traditional make of gold to a cheap yet fine alternative titanium to stronger than steel platinum, rings have taken so many designs and styles that its utterly impossible to lose a choice of your liking.
