Silver Rings

What makes silver as the most prevalent jewelry anywhere is the fact that, as a precious metal, silver is the most inexpensive. And as a soft metal like gold, silver can easily be shaped, bent, and fashion to form one of the most elegant designs in fashion jewelry.

There are really numerous of reasons why choose silver rings over the more sleek platinum and the traditional gold. One of them is design capacity against the inherent hardness or unworkable of platinum and titanium, two of the most prevalent metals. In gold and silver, fancy shape and contours are easy. Gold and silver melt easily, that makes them easier to work with and repair. Platinum and titanium on the other hand, are famed for their outright durability and hardness. Both exude so much tensile strength that they make the most durable ring around. The only thing is that, they are also inherently hard to fashion and shape. As Antonio de Ulloa would say it, Platina del Pinto was an unworkable metal, a subject of critical analysis.

Consequentially, it should mean that anyone looking for exquisitely designed jewelry pieces should look towards gold and silver, and whereas gold is much, much moiré expensive than silver, that makes silver the interesting option with more possibilities.

Such as Celtic Engagement Rings. Since the revival of everything that’s Celtic, especially art, Celtic jewelries, for their intricacy and detail, became an overnight sensation. One of the most popular designs is the Celtic engagement rings. These silver rings feature intricate detail and filigrees; on closer inspection it would seem that these metals are woven together – which they are. With temperature kept steady, the silver metal remains soft and limp. Then the jeweler would then weave them like what you would see on basket weaving. After which, the resulting product, the silver rings would really look like the metal was woven.

We have discussed how silver is the softest metal around. That’s why we should also discuss about Sterling Silver.

We know that silver, as jewelry, cannot exist by itself. Otherwise, the structural integrity of the jewelry would be compromised. The pure silver rings would be so delicate that it will easily bend out of shape. It won’t hold a gemstone well. Pure silver only exist in small scale items, and even then, the pure silver jewelries I’ve seen are not meant to be worn casually. Alloys exist to lend silver structural strength. And the best alloy for silver is sterling silver, the closest to pure silver anyone can get for jewelry. Sterling silver rings would contain 92.5% of pure silver and 7.5% of other metals; with the metals could be anything, from copper, germanium, zinc to platinum. Because copper tend to make silver more brittle even in small amounts, it is the most frequently used as silver alloy. Platinum is an option though more exotic, since what it does is just heighten the price more.

But even with sterling silver (and here we’re talking about the best, more durable form of silver), silver rings can only still use bezel settings. The silver rings I’ve seen that uses prong settings use other metal as prongs than silver. On top quality gemstone silver rings, it’s always on a bezel set, channel, and flush.

So, would you choose silver rings? I should say yes, and the reasons I gave weren’t purely for economic reasons. And one last thing, silver really looks good with gems, and enhances the colors of clear fullerite. One thing of notice though. If you follow the traditional practice, you’d know that silver rings are considered promise rings. Though of course, you can choose to be radical and you can have silver rings on you weddings. Frankly, for the economics they bring, I would choose to be radical.
