Styles Of Pendants

Though stand-alone necklaces, those that go without pendants, are fast becoming an attraction as far as necklaces go, the venerable tradition of necklaces is always on its pendants.

Though it was never clear, many had speculated that the pendants were the ones responsible for the conception of necklaces. In the ancient times, amulets and talismans are used to ward off evil spirits, bring good luck, and supposedly endow a certain individual superhuman characteristics. And since these amulets are to be worn in near proximity to the body, they where usually strung on the hips or the necks using strips of rawhide leather. Hunters, to gain the natural instincts of predators, wore the fangs and claws of a slain predator. As such, in almost all tribal settlements, it’s always common to find strings of necklaces that have tiger teeth and bear claw as pendants. Perhaps it is somewhere in the Middle Ages when pendants became one of the main jewelries worn. During this age the capacity to make minute ornamentations is largely absent, and jewelries are either in the form of rings and pendants.

In today’s light, pendants have mixed outlook. As stated earlier, stand alone necklaces are fast becoming a sensation as the capacity to work metals into something highly attractive has made pendants quite redundant. Also, designs that take the entire circle of a necklace usually make pendants unnecessary. A pearl necklace for instance, is one design that sees pendants as unnecessary. However, pendants are still in fashion. If anything, the biggest revival of necklace pendants was with the release of the movie Titanic. Featuring the now legendary Heart of the Ocean, necklaces with pendants became one again the new chic as far as cocktail parties and ballrooms are concerned.

Locket Pendants

Locket pendants are the most timeless styles of pendants, though today’s preference of locket pendants have waned dramatically. Though locket pendants can store anything as long as it fits the small container, the most time honored is the storing of photographs. Ultimately, most locket pendants sold in the market have a slim pocket for the purpose of storing pictures, and while common shapes would include circle, the most prominent is the heart shaped pendant. Locket pendants are all but disappeared as universal choice, but the photo pendant is still one of the more exquisite choices to give on a love one.

Celtic Pendants

Though the interest in Celtic arts started even during the romantic era, pendants only recently experienced the substantial revival of everything that’s Celtic. In rings, these designs are known as Celtic bands and are highly popular designs themselves. As styles of pendants, the Celtic pendants are intricately designed metal jewelry, without a hint of gems (though some designs do hold gems) so that they cost cheaper despite being elaborately crafted. Celtic styles of pendants, however, are not for your party’s wear.

Gem Pendants

One of the most common styles of pendants, gem pendants now come in all forms and designs. The biggest revival for pendants came from the movie Titanic that features Heart of the Ocean, a magnificent gem pendant that’s influenced by the Hope Diamond.

Gem pendants are not limited to very precious gems however. While diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds are the constituent that makes a very fine pendant necklace, birthstones, or stones of lesser value are also used. Examples of alternative gems include such as amethyst, pearl, and topaz.

Silver Pendants, And Other Metal Pendants

In the light of the Celtic pendants, other metal pendants are made though not in the Celtic art designs. Some of these designs are simple letters; others are on popular symbols like the infinity symbol or the “Star of David” or even the swastika as a sign of rebellious nature.

As said earlier, the venerable tradition of necklaces is always on its pendants, though it may have waned substantially. But head on to any cocktail parties and you’ll see. Pendants are still the biggest sensation since Montecarlo.
